Accessorial fees refers to additional charges beyond the base rate that carriers may apply for supplementary services or unexpected requirements associated with the transportation of goods.  These fees are often specific to certain circumstances or services and are meant to compensate the carrier for additional efforts or resources expended. 

  • Explanation: If the origin or destination lacks a loading dock, a liftgate on the truck is necessary to lower or raise the freight to or from ground level.

    When Applied: When the shipper or consignee does not have the equipment to load or unload the freight.

  • Explanation: This is a fee applied when the carrier is required to move freight from the truck to a specific location inside the building.

    When Applied: When delivery involves transporting the goods beyond the building’s entrance.

  • Explanation: Residential areas often pose additional challenges for carriers, necessitating special considerations.

    When Applied: Deliveries to private homes or areas zoned as residential.

  • Explanation: Some Locations, such as schools, military bases, or construction sites, are considered limited access due to the difficulty in reaching them.

    When Applied: Deliveries or pickups at locations that are challenging to access.

  • Explanation: This fee compensates carriers for the time spent waiting at a facility beyond the agreed-upon loading or unloading times

    When Applied: Delays caused by factors beyond the carrier’s control, such as long loading/unloading times.

  • Explanation: Applied when a carrier attempts delivery but is unsuccessful, requiring a second attempt.

    When Applied: If the consignee is not available or the delivery location is closed during the first attempt.

  • Explanation: Fees incurred when the consignee requests a change in the destination after the shipment is already in transit.

    When Applied: Change in delivery location after the freight has been picked up.
